About Koshido Ryu

Koshido Ryu, which means inner strength, is a group of karate clubs that have been teaching traditional Shukokai karate in Cheshire for over 30 years.

There are clubs in Cheshire at Sandbach, Holmes Chapel, Congleton, Winsford and Middlewich with over 20 lessons per week for everybody from child or adult beginners up to black belt grades.

The club was founded by Sensei David Warburton (8th Dan) who maintains an active interest in all the clubs as well as being the Chief Instructor at Winsford and Middlewich and instructing the club kata and kumite teams.

Sensei John Scott has been at
the club for over
20 years and has now taken over as the Chief Instructor of the clubs at Sandbach, Congleton and Holmes Chapel and, along with the clubs other instructorscontinues to maintain the high standards set by the clubs founder.

The syllabus is laid down and governed by the Shukokai Karate Union (SKU)which is part of Karate England the main governing body for karate and follows the principals of traditional Shukokai karate with a particular emphasis on stance and technical approach.

In addition to learning to punch, block, kick and strike we cover a variety of other defences against attack such as strangulation, attacks with weapons etc.The club also holds monthly "Squad" training sessions for both the fighting and kata competition teams.

Finally, in addition to the "serious" side of karate we have an active social calendar with annual ski trips to Italy, and summer training sessions in San Antonio, Ibiza organised by the SKU, together with summer BBQ's the annual dance and other regular social gatherings.

We hold classes every week day whether for beginners (both children and adults) right up to black belt level and beyond.

The syllabus we teach, and the grades our students obtain, are internationally recognised, we do not teach so called "free style karate" and we place a great emphasis on the principals of traditional karate including etiquette and self discipline.
